Should salaried workers get overtime?

The owner of a small company recently asked FSB's Anne Fisher if he should pay his truck drivers overtime if they put in more than 40 hours a week, even though they worked on salary. Her advice: They may actually be eligible, contrary to popular belief. Do you think salaried workers should get overtime? Make a post here to express your views.

If the worker agrees to a salary for a agreed position and responsibility and an average work week hours then there should be no overtime. Most salaried employees in my company work the 50 hours that they were told they would need to work when they were hired. If they want to get overtime for the 10 hours, no problem, but we will need to adjust the 40 hours wages accordingly as their salary was based on the 50 hours.

Here's one for you guys to chew on. I am considered middle management, Plant Supervisor. I recently put in time for a vacation 3 work days. I get paid every 2 weeks. During those 2 weeks I still worked 74 hours even with my 3 days off. Should I be compensated for my time or not. I work for a small falimy business. 50 to 60 hour work weeks are the norm for me.

This is a good question.

I think overtime should be paid for hours in excess of forty up to 48 hours. This means that if a worker put in 45 hours, that worker would get overtime for those five extra hours. But if a worker put in 50 hours, they would only get overtime payment for the first eight hours. This would encourage workers to work harder but not to waste time.
