" I still believe that Google has a group of monkeys in a secret room that spend their whole day clicking ads…" – Posted By russ, lehi utah

I am inclined to agree with that statement. Either monkeys are used or the clicking is done by software. Google ads are not effective to me because I rarely shop online or click on ads. But somehow, Google is making a killing. It's all one big high-tech pyramid scheme.

How can you compare pre-dotcom acquisitions with recent acquisitions? Back when Geocities was hot, Yahoo! made the right choice to buy it but the trend worked against it. A fairer comparison would be Google Pages which is rubbish by any serious measure (unless you want to host spammy pages)

Yahoo has more content that interests me than Google does. What Google has going for it is apparently its ads are better and I guess for those who are into ad clicking, Google is better. I still believe that Google has a group of monkeys in a secret room that spend their whole day clicking ads and that is where they get their money. I might click an ad on Yahoo or Google one time every other month.

One factor of the "success" seems to be in keeping the identity of the acquisition – i.e. flickr still looks like a separate company as do blogger, youtube, upcoming, etc. In the cases where the acquisition was fully integrated, losing the identity, for the most part they're not as successful.

On another note, Yahoo is a bit of dysfunctional place right now so startups may want to be leery of joining them.
