I bought one and love it. I have had no problems at all. I’ve used Dell for 10 years and wouldn’t use any other company. The price is great for what you get.

For business, getting a machine like this would be a horrific idea. The bottom-line pricing goes back to old school business thinking and consumer guidance: “You get what you pay for” and “caveat emptor” (buyer beware).

With the requirements for operating systems; various software, such as a PDF reader, a multimedia player, and other tools; and the option to multi-task, any business looking at a machine ought see immediately that a 2gig RAM minimum is met. In terms of hard drives, let’s get real: we are generating far more content than in the past, so get a hard drive that’s realistic. A few years ago, 12gig hard drives were the norm; this year, 60gig hard drives are the minimum. Get something bigger than that if you want the machine to be in-service (and of use) for you in the next three-to-five years.

You’re going to get what you pay for. If you want Windows Vista, get 3gigs or 4gigs of RAM, at least 128megs of video RAM (256megs of video RAM is better), and option the machine with USB slots! If you can get eight USB 2.0 slots on the machine (including the ports on the monitor), do it! USB is here to stay, so be sure you can connect devices. Getting USB 2.0 means you can run any USB device, as USB 2.0 is backward compatible. If you get USB 1.x slots, you’re pretty much stuck with that, which means you’re going to suffer.

Be wise. Pay a few dollars more and get something for that CODB write-off, er, investment.

Dell’s Precision 390 is also a very nice entry level workstation. I looked at the Vostro and the 390 is more suited for graphic production and has not disappointed in similar fashion with qualitys such as you have described.

It’s just a machine!!! It will break. At this price point how can you make anything of quality. I bet the power supply goes out in the first 6 months – (in a business environment). Most businesses keep the machines running 24/7 so the IT staff can update and audit the software on each machine.
