Bug Labs takes on the gadget giants

A startup dazzled CES with its do-it-yourself gadget construction modules. What do you think of the BugBase?

I am sceptical about the chances for this innovation to work as is. Let's be honest – this is a gadget that will have potential to do everything at mediocre level with high price to boot and zero support. Plus, if I understand it correct, for each Bug add-on to work you have to snap it to the base? This is at the time when every piece of electonics in your home or car has gone wireless? Make the base Wi-Fi and Bluetooth friendly and now you have something going on here because multiple add-ons would be able to share the same base.

Hi Jonathan,
I enjoyed your article on Bug Labs.
I'm the ceo of Home Concetps Products, a housewares company, which is built on the foundation of innovation.
I was wondering, at CES did you notice any innovative idea that would be cool or clever if it could make its way into the housewares area?

Thanks
Mike

I do think that the Buglabs concept can do well, but for the reasons mentioned in the article, it may need someone bigger to back it so that its reliability, performance etc. is not doubted.

This is where IMHO, the hardware tends to differ from software..You can always uninstall a piece of software & maybe not depend on it so much. But planning a trip with a block by block built GPS, will mean that every piece of that Lego better work.

Good concept though. It is interesting to see what a small business can do with 30K whereas it will take a big business millions of dollars to produce something like that.

I love this idea and can see so many possibilities for it's future. I hope BugLabs has a copyright or something on its base and add-ons so it doesn't lose out on next gen systems. Can I take it to the office, use it as a blackberry, make a call, email and text message? Can I internet and google what I need? Can my kid take it to school and print out his homework there? Can he use it for homework help as well as for games?….You go BugLabs! This is really cool and has the potential for something even better!!
