5 PayPal alternatives
Our reporter found five promising e-commerce payment sites. What's worked for you? Share your experiences here.
I just love your site and I had paypal take my business for over 9K this year already and I wanted to let you know that I have found a first party merchant account that offers un-advertised specials for Business that have been ripped off by paypal.com. Thought I would add a website to your list of alternatives. Here is the link.
Trialpay is great though I wish they would list all the programs that are free through them (like posted here, but unoficially – http://goodle.crmreports.com/2008/11/trialpay-reloaded-400-with-trialpay.html
Hello!
I want to tell you my story so that people will know the truth about AlertPay. I'm writing you since you wrote the article about them on CNN's site.
Two months ago or so I used another online payment system to invest in an autosurf site that could pay you a good return. I paid them with LibertyReserve and then requested via AlertPay because they allowed this. That autosurf then paid me. And I requested to withdraw that amount from AlertPay to my bank account. My alertpay account is verified as I sent all my papers and even talked to them on the phone. But they chosed to deny my withdraw and locked my account so that they can get my money. I earned those money correctly by doing webdesign and I knew that I risk to lose them in a autosurf program but never thought that the real thief is Alertpay. I've written them numerous emails and they threaten me with the Interpol and Scotland Yard. Are they kidding me? First of all I'm not obliged to tell no one about my money not to the Interpol, not to the CIA or ANS but even if that was the case they think I'm stupid to think that I did something wrong. And not that they stole my money and are now desperately trying to hold on o them by scaring me. I'm a tough woman, I work in webdesign for so many years and have met a lot of people and I'm able to know when I'm being lied to and stolen from.
Sorry for the long message but I hoped that perhaps you could do sort of a follow up on that story so that people won't be fooled again. I wrote them numerous emails but it's like talking to my parrots they ignore me and keep asking me the same questions that I answer again and again.
God bless,
Elisabeth
I am surprised that no-one has talken about http://www.paypay.com.
This company has a great product wih most diversified country to country fund transfers possibilities and is the BEST REPLACEMENT FOR paypal.
Steve Case's Revolution Money Exchange product is a viable alternative to PayPal. Their MoneyExchange product is comparable to Pay Pal, but better!!!!! It offers an easy and secure way to send and receive money online between accountholders for FREE!!!!
After evaluating and reviewing many alternatives, I found that Moneybookers and AlertPay are the most prominent. Both have good customer support, and are quite less restrictive than Paypal in terms of your country of origin. Also, fees are competitive and clearly stated in their websites.

I've been using AlertPay for a few years now, and I'm very happy with their service. They've been improving significantly over the last few years. They have been very responsive to my needs and are understanding. Go AlertPay go.
I find that AlertPay is great! I had a hacker get into my account and I called them and it was taken care of..Try calling paypal..lol.. We changed esbhost.com over to alertpay for all crdit cards.. I will back Alertpay 100%

Owner of esbhost.com and CobraScripts.com
We are searching for new merchant since we are sick of PayPal ridiculous policies. Thanks for the great article. Yejv Www
I use another New E-Currency. If anyone want to use it, they can contact me. For the First 10 People who contact me, I will give $100 Free into their E-Currency(This New One)Account after they join Free.

I agree!! Alertpay is the worst! I sent my verification paperwork several weeks ago and have not been verified yet! I say e-gold all the way! Alertpay is the pits
Some articles about e-currencies i found here:
http://www.e-money.com
Take a look at FastSpring E-Commerce (http://www.fastspring.com). There's no provider out there with better customer service. Lots of other advantages, too.
I`ve met AlertPay today; hope it will be an efficient collaboration.
for our business there is Moneybookers.com still the prime processing system, because it is w/o recharge risk as PayPal or 2CO have, and easy transfer to VISA or Bank account within EU zone.
The fees are low, and they accept all national and international CCs and DebitCards allover the world.
AlertPay we try out for US customers who may have problems to open a Moneybookers.com account, with good experience.
PayPal we don't use anymore after they forced a paxpbak to a fraudulent buyer and we had the total loss of all.
PayPal supports fraudulent buyers in fact, no security for the seller if not both, buyer and seller, are within US.
Well we are yet to find a company that would allow international merchants to accept credit card payments or echecks without the requirement of their customers to create an account or merchants would process their customer's orders if the customer is not interested to go on the website to process a payment or place an order. Alertpay is a good company but if they can add these options, it will resolve lots of problems for internation merchants.
Regards
Alertpay is absolutely horrible.
I have tried and tried and tried to purchase something using my credit card (for $130).. every time it says I've exceeded my limit.. how can this be when it is my first purchase. Further investigation (ie I called them) showed they have a $100 limit on credit card transactions.. Ridiculous? You bet!
I found the perfect online payment system for those of you who have International buyers that don't have a credit card.
Revolution Money Exchange has been the best that I have found because all transactions are free to you and from you.. They also give you $25.00 to sign up and $10.00 for everyone that you refer. It's all free!!! This will be the next Paypal!! Check it out for yourself!!
Revolution MoneyExchange allows you to collect payment for goods or services through their website. Best of all, payments you receive through Revolution MoneyExchange are FREE to buyers and free for sellers as long as you’re a MoneyExchange FREE accountholder.
The more people you tell about MoneyExchange, the more bonuses you can get. You will get a $10 referral bonus for each person who registers from your referral and is approved.
No credit card needed!
For every payment you receive from a customer who signs-up FREE, you get $10! (Up to $500)
MoneyExchange is a peer to peer money exchange program that plans to challenge PayPal by offering free on-line money transfers. That’s right. No more complicated fee structures to decipher (and pay!) when sending or receiving money on-line. I love the convenience of PayPal, but I hate paying the fees!
What is Revolution Money Exchange? Revolution Money Exchange is an on-line money transfer company that allows people and merchants to exchange money without paying fees. It’s free to register, add money, send money, receive money, request money and withdraw electronically to a bank account. There are fees to withdraw money by check or to receive a paper statement.
How is Revolution Money Exchange Different from PayPal? The biggest difference is in the fee structure, but there are several other notable differences. With Revolution Money Exchange, the only fees you will pay will be to receive a paper statement, withdraw funds via check, or if you mess up (withdraw too much, “bounce a check,” etc.). The good news is that you can use Revolution Money Exchange without being subjected to fees. With PayPal on the other hand, fees are practically unavoidable. PayPal’s fees are often substantial, and sometimes you don’t know what you will pay until you pay them.
Is Revolution Money Exchange safe? Yes. It was important for me to research this before I signed up, because Revolution Money Exchange requires your social security number to create an account. Don’t worry, there is no hard credit check done using your SSN. It is clearly stated on the sign-up form – “This information is not used to review your credit history or to establish new credit.”
The account is issued by First Bank & Trust, Brookings, SD, Member FDIC and part of the Fishback Financial Corporation. It is also backed by Citi, Morgan Stanley, and Deutsche Bank AG, and brought in a $50 million venture capital round backed by Ted Leonsis and AOL Founder Steve Case.
The best way for Revolution Money Exchange to gain traction against PayPal is to get the people’s attention and convince them their service is something they need. Then RME needs to get these new customers to begin using the service.
I have only one problem with AlertPay. Everything works fantastic, rapid and secure bank transfers, etc.; but, when it comes to call them I only hear robots talking to me. This happened at least three times, few days ago. However, the service they provide is great, and I hope they will improve the customer service too.

I've used e-junkie for six months to sell both a digital download (eBook) and tangible goods (trophies). I've stayed with them because of ease of use, excellence in delivering downloadable products, and low price. There are some cons, though, especially around the area of thank you emails. Read my full e-junkie shopping cart software review
Alertpay is trused and I request my withdrawal. I'am from Hungary and not have problem with Alertpay!
But Paypal is NOW NOT my primery payment processor!
Stormpay is scam.
E-gold I lost my money, not have good security.
Alertpay seem to not answer their help lines or e-mails.
I have yet to be verified although I have sent my information, but I have funds in alertpay that I wish to withdraw.
I will post again with any further updates but for now it doesn't look great.
Hello,
I'm not really sure how I ended up here but I enjoyed your article.
I use a few different payment processors for my websites, Currently I have 5 websites with another in the works.
Over the last 5 years, I have found that my best responses from my clients have been with Paypal, Alertpay, Moneybookers, and eGold.
I was a Stormpay user for sometime but they started taking money out of my account so I closed that one down.
Paypal unfairly restricted my account and ignored me when I took steps to resolve the problem so I no longer use them but once again I can shop for bargains on ebay because sellers are using web2check.com now to receive my money easily direct from my checking account.
Try web2check they worked for me.
http://www.web2check.com
I found Web2Check to use for my businesses on the web and am quite satisfied. There was no setup fee involved and they accept all business types. I can now accept checks online, by phone or by fax with just a $1.25 transaction fee per order, Web2Check customer service is A++
I use web2check, the low per transaction fee is unbeatable. Simple integration and great support.
I suggest Web2Check. Transaction fees are only $1.25 regardless of the transaction size.
Web2Check provides all the tools you need to fraud scrub your transactions.
Any business model is accepted including MLM and adult services.
HomeATM ePayment Solutions is unique in that it is the ONLY payment solution that enables you to use your PIN Debit card on the web. My identity and personal info is NEVER entered -it's like a cash based transaction. I WISH MORE MERCHANTS ACCEPTED HOMEATM.
Thanks for the article on PayPal alternative sites. E-Junkie is the best solution for delivery of digital products, so we signed up. E-Junkie will help us deliver our PDF (eBooks). We have our own list PayPal altneratives:
http://www.mermaidmonkey.com/Paypalalternatives.html
The service is very unreliable and communication with paying subscribers is almost non-existent during outages. Yes, outages of a shopping cart service which by the way take us off-line and put us out of business for whatever period of time they are down. Aside from that it is a great service but they must resolve reliability issues ASAP.
@Jennifer, if you pay a buyer for a tangible item and he does not deliver it, you can always contact the payment processor for a refund.
Now, if you used an offline payment method, then you have been victim of a scam and that could have happened on craigslist or ebay or any other website.
I used the E-junkie free 7 day trial.
I got it all set up and running in one evening, Real user friendly.
Ran a successful test with my brother, then received 2 orders from regular site visitors
I subscribed to the service shortly after

Heads up on e-junkie fraud:
I ordered an iphone from James Stewart (link below), and he requested I send a money gram. Once he received the money he never sent the iphone.
Also, I found the same feedback from another customer on this blog:
We at Treasure-Adventure.com were one of the first to find and join e-junkie to sell our downloadable and printable games, and we were so impressed ourselves, especially as compared to all the other services we explored, that we wrote an article praising their offerings at:
http://www.treasure-adventure.com/ejunkie.html
if anyone would be interested in reading more about them, although many new services and features have been added since the article was written. We love them and still know of no affordable service provider that can compete with them! They started out as a small group of talented techies who quickly transformed e-junkie into an amazing digital download community, and I would highly recommend that anyone interested in selling digital downloads read our article, visit the ejunkie website to explore features, and make a comparison yourself with all the competitors. I doubt you'll find anyone who can come close to beating them.
E-Junkie is awesome, by far the simplest and most configurable of shopping carts available online to those who are unfamiliar with PHP, Perl, MySQL, and coding in general.
I read your article, "Ebay " and if you are looking for E-bay
alternatives check out http://www.radicalbuy.com
Regards,
Darin
Google Checkout! Seller pays 2% + $.20 per transaction, and they don't hold your funds.
Try Propay. I've used it for shopping cart and on eBay auctions.
We use e-Junkie for our royalty-free loops & beats site (http://www.trakax.com/software/trakpacks/).
Great service – really easy to set-up, maintain and track.
I've been using e-junkie for 18 month to sell our,
accent training course and in that time I have found it very simple to setup an use, highly reliable and cost effective. Creating an online business hsa never been easier.
I recommend a new kid on the block. THis is truly aimed at international users. Not everyone is from the US and Canada and the world needs something that is cheaper than Western Union. It is called U-gotcash . Fees! no fee to transfer account to account! just to fund and withdraw so sellers will incur no fees.. no monthly fee to use it either and it is merchant friendly .. located outside of the US. No frozen accounts and MLM's, etc. are welcome. See here http://www.u-gotcash.com/site/ladytrader
I've decided to create a blog dedicated to AlertPay Payment processor : News , updates , details.
Feel free to browse it here: AlertPay Blog
E-junkie is a top-notch solution, with:
-a plethora of features
-low usage costs
-very friendly people who reply to any request within a few hours.
I recently switched to them and I am very happy with their service.

E-junkie has made my online business life so much easier! I spent $200 on a shopping cart program, and I prefer e-junkie at $5 a month. I even showed my dad how to use it to deliver his digital products, and he's completely non-technical!
I have been using e-Junkie since last year and I love it! Great design and superior customer service :)
I sell and deliver electronic PDF files to clients…
I use paypal for simple transactions, but for business I use Alertpay and Solid Trust Pay.
I've been using E-junkie for about 4 months. Need no technical skills and extremely easy to integrate. Best of all the quality of service is best and has the lowest price of all shopping cart providers. With a free trial period and no Google Checkout fees last year, we saved big time. I want for E-junkie to be successful and provide more innovative products
I`v been useing e-junkie for 5 months now my online busniess is doing very well thx for E-junkie! :) Great service. A++
Nice to see the article about e-junkie. I've been using them since March of '07 and I really couldn't be happier. I never worry about online security for my customers, even though I personally don't have the technical skills needed for it.
To be honest, I have had a few problems with digital delivery of my products this past month, for the first time ever. But when I researched the problem, it was PAYPAL'S fault, not e-junkie's!! lol
I love e-junkie. Straightforward, cheap, easy, effective, and Robin answers support emails within a few hours or shorter time period. Yay!
After trying the far inferior PayLoadz for digital delivery of my products, I found E-junkie. Since making the switch, my customers have had no complaints or problems with their transactions, and I'm thrilled with the prompt, polite customer service E-junkie provides. Three cheers for E-junkie!
We use e-junkie and a little js magic to sale our products. Works great and a good price for the 100+ products we have listed. flossfish.com
We used e-junkie to transact nearly half a million dollars 2007. The combination of e-junkie and Google as our merchant for '07 saved us several tens of thousands of dollars in transaction fees.
These guys have a great product that's just now becoming mature. One to keep your eye on.
Aboriginal culture goes E-Junkie for our site http://www.aboriginalart.com.au
We are an Aboriginal community based in Alice Springs in the desert of Central Australia. We use E-junkie to market Aboriginal culture books (in English,French and German)and music to 36 countries worldwide. The fantastic instant download system and payment process means our store can operate 24/7 providing income to our community.A student wanting to hear Aboriginal music can download tracks in minutes and play on thier i-pod.
sharing our culture with the world.
As a small business selling downloadable goods for web designers, e-junkie is a cheap and effective system for delivering goods. Can't fault it!
After hearing several people mention "AlertPay" I will look into that service.
All of my products are digital and e-junkie automates the entire sales and delivery process and I love it. I also teach people how to use Ejunkie at my marketing workshops because it is so simple to set-up.
As someone mentioned, it's not just an alternative to paypal, as it uses paypal. However, you can also use it with Google Checkout and other payment processors.
The quickest way to get up and running in e-junkie are these video tutorials:
E-Junkie Videos Sold via ejunkie, of course!
E-Junkie is the best utility for enabling digital and physical goods sales on my website by far!
Totally cheap, but totally awesome!
By comparison with other 'digital goods' services (heck, even independently), e-junkie.com is my choice as unrivaled, undisputed champ.
Whether you are a geek or technophobe (a spectrum wherein I fall slightly toward geek) e-junkie.com gets it done for you. Simple sign-up, simple set-up, simple answers. Simply put, e-junkie.com means success for sellers and buyers alike (as well as host)!
I use e-junkie to sell my card making ebook on ebay and on my own site and I must say that it is a little gem. And what service and personal attention. It your only man as they say in Ireland. If you sell electronic books or other items E-junkie is the only site you need. I couldn't do with out it.
all the best from http://www.kforkards.com
I love e-junkie.com. It's been a great resource for my site, http://www.fundraisingcoach.com.
AlertPay has now made it possible to make a payment using my Visa or Master Card
and continues to support the Verified by Visa (VBV) program. I have am glad to see that they are working to provide the best service.
E-Junkie, the standard that other E commerce sites should be judged by. Benjy from http://www.woodenwidget.com
MuvEnum has been using E-Junkie for nearly 3 years and the support and service has been beyond phenomenal! When we worked with them to integrate with SwiftCD, they turned our then custom work into complete integration in their system so all users could integrate with SwiftCD. They support PayPal, Google Checkout, and many more providing exactly the services you need and saving 10-20% per item sold compared to the "Software Specific Selling Companies that take you for all you're worth!". We've tried 2 other companies and no one comes close to E-Junkie.
E-junkie is not really a substitute to PayPal since it still using it…but has been the perfect answer to our needs at several levels. It completely manages the delivery of intangible products…it is really easy to incorporate, and the cost is really in adequation with the size of your business. Just try it and you'll save much time.
I used eBillme, http://www.ebillme.com at crutchfield, http://www.crutchfield.com
eBillme lets you pay cash straight from your bank account, and you dont have to sign up, or rack up interest on your credit card. They also have a great buyer protection program, just in case.
I've been using E-Junkie since our business started almost three years ago.
Only 2 days downtime in three years, always get an answer if I need help, absolutely trouble free transactions, and only pennies per month! I always feel guilty at paying such a low price ($10/month) I keep trying to pay more, but Techie Robin always refuses to take my money!
Fantastic service!!
The best ever – Ive used them for more then one year to deliver eBooks and more. Highly Recommended. Check the link…
http://www.alertpay.com/?iUV2Wb3pYJq3uZoC6e6dyg%3d%3d
I was paying a service called PayLoadz as much as $75/month. They were fired after sending unpaid downlinks and stating that the merchant was a dumbass and should give them my PayPal password so they could find the non-existing payments.
While I hate their name, e-junkie.com has proven to be a mature, reliable system which for a flat $5 a month is bargain. For me the good service is more valuable than the low price.
One note: 2checkout.com now accepts PayPal as part of their payment system. I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
All in all, I've used 2checkout for years and have been pleased with their service and ease of use.
Mick Moore – The Internet Entrepreneur highly recommends E-Junkie. What a great and easy way to make my digital downloads available online.
I use a printed form that is signed in blood with arangements when those are not met I use mafiacollections.com ; Lou and Gino specificly.. they goes and gets me whats mine sometimes with a bat and tire iron. it never goes much farther than dat they are very perswasive, ohh they get 23% that they charge my clients upon collection, sometimes they have to sit at the atm for 4 transactions sometimes they wait till the banks open the next day and keep the client in the trunk for safe keeping till then.
I've been selling online for over 10 years and I always use a merchant service that integrates to my Bank Merchant account (in my specific case, Authorize.Net and NOVA Merchant Services). It works excellent, the only complaint I have is that when the US Postal Service messes up (less than 1%), the customer instead of tracking it or contacting their local Post Office they take the easy way out and submit a chargeback. Credit Card companies have to understand that say you purchase a gift a store and you then go to the Post Office to mail it to someone, if the US Postal Service losses the package and you did not insured it, can the customer submit a chargeback. They can but the Credit Card company cannot chargeback the Post Office or the store where the merchandise was purchased from. What's the difference from an online store then? Why do Credit Card companies allow customers to penalize merchants if the merchant did it's job? The bottom line is that THE CREDIT CARD COMPANIES have to work with the good merchants instead of penalizing them.
Being a self publisher, and unable to afford the big book distribution comapnies, E-junkie was the outlet source that helped my home based business off the ground. Without E-junkie, my company would not exist.
I am a stay-at-home father turned small-business owner who uses E-Junkie on http://www.BabySleepSound.com to deliver white noise MP3 downloads and CDs to tired parents who have babies that won't sleep.
My company has experienced fantastic growth since it started in 2006, and I am convinced that the ease of use and reliability of E-Junkie's service is the main reason why.
Glad to see e-junkie listed here. We absolutely love it and we use on one of our sites at Practice-Questions.com
E-Junkie allows be to sell product to users over the internet and manage my online store with the most simplistic user panel. I have made over $2,500 using enjunkie just in the month of january!
I have been using E-junkie for almost two years now in my educational software business. The company has been exceptionally helpful to me, and I owe a good deal of my growth in sales to their shopping cart, which is one of the most usable on the market today. (And you sure can't beat $5 a month!)
E-Junkie.com is a perfect service for selling digital downloads. We use it on http://www.MixedInKey.com to sell our software online. It has worked great for us. It's dependable, easy to use, and costs pennies compared to other services.
So far, it's been great! Their website can give you details of the services they provide, but as an end user I'll tell you what impressed us the most.
The SAME day we listed our product on e-Junkie, our listing showed up as TOP result on Google. Don't know how they did that, but it was awesome for us to see. :)
I would also like to mention that we sell posters online and the e-Junkie cart is the only one we found that could intelligently perform shipping calculations for us. Yet another reason we will be dedicated customers.
No mention of Google Checkout? It's certainly more widely used than most of the 5 alternatives mentioned. Google Checkout is easy to integrate with any shopping cart system or web site, or can be used to simply request money via email – like paypal.
I'm in the UK, and when I want to sell something I sell it on MarketWall now instead of eBay.
http://marketwall.com/
On MarketWall I can sell to people that live near me and insist on cash payments, so I don't need to worry about PayPal or other payment systems.
The very best – Ive used them for over one year to deliver eBooks. Highly Recomended.
There is another site. http://www.moneybookers.com/ which I use with http://www.delcampe.net/
I use AlertPay.com. They're really good and good support. I think they are a great up and comer. Their fees are cheaper then Paypal's. They're missing some advanced integration tools but I heard they are working on them.
I have used Plimus.com for several years now. They continue to add new features and I run my small affiliate program for my site FamilyHistoryProducts.com with
it.
Before Plimus, I used QuickPayPro. It
is a great platform as well, but too
expensive at $45 per month.
Wow, what happened to Propay not being featured? Talk about a reasonable ecommerce feature! With Propay, you pay a flat fee (around $30) a YEAR, not a month- and 2.3% per transaction. You do have to manually enter the info but for small sellers, it's a goldmine compared to a DOLLAR (!!!!) or .45 per transaction PLUS the interest rate that the featured ones charage. It's also ultra secure and many, many ebayers with stores (including myself) use it on our personal sites.
Check into MoneyRevolution, which is being accepted now on Bidville.com. It was easy to sign up, unlike PayPal. They gave me a $25 cash bonus just to join and have given me $10 for each referral. I love it. Not many buyers recognize the name yet, so I am still forced to offer PayPal as a payment method in addition to MoneyRevolution. Very much worth your checking into.

My company helps businesses process through Wells Farg and for e-commerce we offer smaller businesses a low-cost alternative to Paypal. Our product allows online purchases through a regular merchant account we set up for you at rates lower than Paypal. The application also works off any PC at the cash register in your retail bricks and mortar store and you can even process credit cards in the field on your cell phone. I can be reached at Credit Card Merchant News website http://creditcardmerchantnews.com
