Hello Diana,

In making your decision to move to Colorado please have the resources to raise your child comfortably because Colorado is not a child friendly place. According to government statistics the number of children living in poverty grew 73% from 2000 to 2006. State Representative John Keflas stated that " Our state has had one of the most dramatic increases in childhood poverty in the whole country." Therefore, I would seriously consider the burgeoning poverty rate when deciding to move your family to Colorado. Remember Colorado is not Switzerland it is more like Bolivia.

I grew up in NYC and lived in L.A. for 6 years before moving to Denver. We moved here for the more affordable housing and to open a business. We live in Lakewood -- which is convenient to both Denver and the Mountains. The town is definitely a bit lame socially compared to NYC and LA - however, it feels safer to bring up our daughter here. We sacrificed friendships and a social life for opportunities involving business ownership, real estate and more free time. Once you get used to having an ocean nearby -- it's very difficult to compare a place without a beach. Traffic is better but food prices are definitely high! Taxes are as high as NY or LA -- Finding good, solid workers is very difficult. People here are definitely slower, and less "sharp" than other cities I've lived, overall. I attribute it to having less social exposure and less opportunity for higher levels of excitement and experience. I'm in a phase where it would be great to have girlfriends, but that's not my priority at this point in my life. Later on, when I care more about being near a beach and palm trees, about interacting with people with more passion in their personalities -- I think I will wind up leaving Denver eventually. For now, it works in the big picture.

Hello, I find it very interesting when general facts about an area are mentioned and the person pointing out these facts is attacked. It is similiar to giving details of the lives of individuals suffering poverty in Denver and then being attacked for being delusional and focusing on a negative aspect of the Denver fabric. Additionally, prayer and observation of a faith that adheres to treating each person as you would like to be treated is a great concept. I will very much appreciate your prayers and I will pray for you also. BTW, Denver's unemployment rate is approximately 7.8%. Pray for those seeking employment here and around the world. Prayer is an elixir to the soul. I would like to know what faith do you profess September 1, 2009? Does your faith believe in reality, compassion, and facts? God Bless

Matt, I apologize. I initially thought you were the general "attention seeking" web hound, but now I actually do believe you may be quite literally emotionally disturbed. I am sorry for whatever ailed you to become like this. I know many joke about how awful Denver is to keep the Californians out, but I believe you really are suffering some sort of paranoid delusions. You will be in my prayers as you fight through your issues. The world is not a scary place as it may seem to you. I am sorry for taking your illness so lightly and I do hope you get the help you require. God bless.

I am glad there has been a few blogs posted since the last time I had the opportunity to post a blog. Additionally, my name was mentioned, which I am honored to state. However, references to what I actually stated was incorrect. Generally according to health statistics Colorado has a high suicide and mental illness rate. It is definitely must be due to the genetic makeup of the people who decide to reside in Colorful Colorado. Also, isolation in the Plains or the Mountains can cause degeneration of the soul and mind. It seems like there is a general consensus that approaching rude people in Denver or Colorado is not a difficult encounter to experience. I understand the desire for people to move away seeking greener pastures because of frustration with life in your current pasture. However, I am concerned that a lot of people moving to Colorado were emotional basket cases in their home states and everyone is relieved that they decided to move. Unfortunately, that leaves Colorado with these demented souls. For example, I overheard some new Colorado transplants exlaiming their contentment with the lower minority population. I hope these new transplants are not harbingers of a future Columbine. It is important that all Coloradans be able to enjoy their lives in the state that they reside in.
PEACE Matt

That is true. You are better off elsewhere. This is not a good place for anyone. I think that if you would like to truely experiance the facets of life it should be done elsewhere. We are all nuts and this place is for the birds. Get out if you can and take your negitivitiy where it can be appreciated.

Ann, all do respect, I don't like Golden at all. I wouldn't say that the people of Golden act anything like the people of Denver. It is like two different worlds. I find people in Golden to be incredibly rude - I feel like I am in California as do a couple of my friends and my husband. I think it is very pretty. I think it is very cool how they have it set up "old western style" but the people there are rude, obnoxious, and just downright ignorant. That is the truth. No doubt about it. If you go into Littleton however, I think that while they can be snooty and stuck up and can be quite "Californian" as well, they at least say "thank you" - "pardon me" and are at least POLITE and show some MANNERS. Being those two cities are only minutes apart. The behaviors of the towns around Denver can vary quite differently. I would not insist on everyone being "crazy" like Matt from Denver seems to be a tad paranoid and delusional about that one. But they can be ruder in some towns than others.

Matt in Denver? Are you serious? It sounds to me you may suffer from some sort of "delirium". I really don't think we have one of the hugest relocation rate because of a bunch of people in rubber rooms. The economy is better here... (yes, to a spoiled Coloradan - you have no idea how bad it is in other states like where I came from.), the scenery and weather is better here. People move here for health improvements, the scenery, the wildlife, the economy. Not because everyone needs shock therapy. That is absolutely crazy, which makes me wonder about your own mental health. FYI, shock therapy is available in all 50 states. No need to come all the way to Denver to receive it. *eyeroll*

I live in Denver. It is a wonderful place to live. My husband and I relocated here from the midwest and we will never go back. I would say the only place better for us would maybe be "Colorado Springs, CO." But this state is for us. Beautiful parks, amazing wildlife, friendly people, gorgeous Rocky Mountain backdrop to your daily routine. It is as if we are on vacation 24-7. As an aspiring photographer, I don't think there is a better place to live for photography. So many locations to either take photos or film movies. It is breathtaking. The weather is gorgeous as well. Mild and sunny summers with no humidity. Who could ask for more?

I visited Colorado not too long ago for about a month and I didn't want to leave. It was beautiful and clean compared to Ohio. The altitude didn't take that long to adjust to. It wasn't full of hicks, thugs and uneducated idiots. And if you want to talk mental illness, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee rank highest in the country - a far cry from Colorado's laid back people that I saw when I was there. Everybody around here has attitudes and act as if they hate their jobs and life, but in Ohio, how can you not? I'll be moving to Colorado in a year to pursue my master's degree. I want out of this P.O.S. state, Ohio.

Wow, some fascinating posts. I have always thought that Denver was a city where people have gone to "escape" their home-town lives and "start anew." My parents did just that in 1977, instead of getting a divorce here in Indianapolis. I lived in Denver from 1983-1988 and visit the city frequently. I have always found Denver to be a frenetic city without an identity. The city has no heart or soul. I guess everyone left their soul back in their midwestern hometowns. What's left are Broncos-backing Zombies. It is quite ugly, too, with many drab post-modern high-rises and smog.

I believe in addressing problems and not running away from the truth. According 2007 US poverty rate statistics, Colorado had an 11.5% poverty rate and Indiana had a 12.3%. Considering the cost of living in Colorado is higher than in Indiana, poverty is a greater struggle in Colorado than in Indiana. Also, if you take in consideration the large mentally ill population, the high suicide rate and extreme drug use. Colorado and Denver are a scenic places suffering from dysfunctional people in need of shock therapy. The temperant and mental health of a population is the deciding factor on whether or not you have a healthy environment. Unfortunately, Colorado and Denver are blessed with natural beauty but stocked with delirious people in rubber rooms. Please express why you think Denver is a great place to live and start a small business.

Please, Denver is known for mental illness and high suicide rates. People are not naturally jovial and optimistic. Medication does assist some individuals having extremely positive outlooks. Considering the high unemployment, foreclosure, and bankruptcy rates one would have to question the financial and mental health of Denverites. Regarding infrastructure, Denver has some decent facilities that are not rated highly according to critics. Please view the Mercer report of the top cities in 2009. Denver is not listed in the top 250 for quality of living.

I have been visiting Denver since 89. I lived permanently in Colorado from 1994 to 2005. The people are very optimistic, and family oriented. They want to enjoy life 'everyday', not just have a well paying position. I now live in Massachusetts, and the difference is its hard to accomplish anything in the Northeast due to the bureaucracy. People in the west want to get the project done and move on. The location of Denver makes it very inviting. A person can enjoy a thriving economy and be in the mountains in minutes,or drive to DIA and be on a plane to anywhere in the world. There are many museums that rival Boston and NYC. Coors field, Pepsi Center to name a few venues. The amount of restaurants available will leave one stupified. When my time is up here I will certainly resume my 'life' again in Colorado. Unless you have lived there you cannot imagine the lifestyle it offers.

The reason Denver has bad drivers can not be attributed solely to California drivers. You must admit Denver has many bad drivers from Texas, Illinois, California, and other states. It is a mental condition that comes from a heavily medicated Denver populace on psychiatric drugs and a lack of oxygen because of the high altitude. The installation of alternative modes of transportation will not enhance the livability of residing in Denver because you still have the defective people that abandon their home towns because of mental problems and seeking Denver to alleviate their problems. Unfortunately, relocating does not help disturbed mentally ill people. Once Denverites are enrolled in programs for courtesy, kindness, consideration of others, diversity denazification, and mental health composure then Denver will be a city that can be labeled as a respectable city to live in. With confidence I believe Denver will be able to meet those objectives within a century.

The reason some people don't like Denver is because too many Californians moved here and I attribute the bad drivers to that. It wasn't always like that. I have lived here all my life and once FastTracks rail system gets installed this city will be better than NY or LA because you can escape to the mountains for a quick ski trip. OK, so there's no ocean but it is still a great place to live if you like lots of sun and Brothers BBQ!
