Small-Cap Gems

Small companies are growing and attracting investors in a slowing economy. What do you think about these small-cap picks? Have any picks of your own?

I have two value/growth/contraian picks for everyone. All have been beaten down in this crazy market. MTW and MCRI. Where to begin…How about valuation. On a sectorial comparison each both of these destroy their competitors in Price to sales, Price to book, Price to book per share, P/E, and PEG, both on a present and a historical basis. Additionally, the decline in P/S and P/B per share is more severe for these stocks than their peers. On top of that these have solid financial health both long term and short term. Management effeciency is above par for all of these, relative to their competitors. MTW, farm equipment is linked to the commodity prices. Some say there is a bubble in the farm commodity business and this may be true. In fact it is hard to find a steal in the farming machinery, but this may be one. MCRI, a resort and casino. Everyone is talking about the negative impact to the bottom line of these places due to the increase in gas prices. Well yes there will be an impact but the impact does not appropriatly reflect the ratios and price of this stock. I'm up 13% in two weeks off this contrarian puppy and will be staying for a while.

Absolutely right!

The same that will happen to MDG.DE, which will be aquired by Pfizer, soon.

Where did you find this Mario Gabelli guy? His comments: "STRATEGIC buyers taking advantage of low stock prices to grow their businesses through acquisition." and "Companies are finding it cheaper to buy than to greenfield [build their own], and the fact that these small companies are undercovered by Wall Street means there are a lot of STRATEGIC bargains out there" are ridiculous. Give me a break. Does he really know what a "STRATEGIC" buyer is? How about a "STRATEGIC" bargain? How are these any different from regular old buyers / bargains? Sounds tasty, but I'm not eating what he's cooking. Run for the strategic hills, folks!

I agree with the TRA and CF recommendations-food production isn't a fad. The scarcity of Sulfuric acid is driving up costs for fertilizer makers, so I chose to supplement my portfolio with MMLP which has fertilizer ops and supplies it's own sulfuric acid and sells it's excess to companies like CF.

I have a fondness for Isilon…a company that should do well as broadcasting converts to HD.
