A new hook for Maine lobsters

As lobstermen struggle with rising costs and dwindling revenue, a pair of sibling seafood purveyors hope to turn the tide with a new program offering foodies a piece of the Maine waterway: their own personal lobster trap. What do you think of the plan?

Your Answers

I love lobsters, but I would never be able to consume all the lobsters from owning a trap. For me sticking to the on demand, buy as you need lobsters ie… companies like Simplylobsters work for me. They seem to overall, offer lower lobster delivery to your door. And you pay for what you want delivered fresh overnight.

I think it's a very creative and interesting idea. I couldn't afford to join but I sure wish them success!

Late on the game here, but y'all aren't considering one thing: is there a market for people that want to eat THAT MUCH lobster over the course of a year?

I like the idea, and I know one of the Readys (went to college with him), but I am not sure this is a sustainable idea, as return business will be tough to get on the private market as people will realize too much of a good thing is just that…too much.

There is a market for this service: people with more money than time. But for $3k per year, we'll continue to take family vacations to get the freshest catch AND take the time to enjoy it.

It all sounds wonderful, but how does anyone really know how many Lobsters are being caught? Who keeps track? Seriously, growing up I worked on my dad's Lobster boat. Your out in the middle of no where, fishing. So how does one know if they're even getting whats being caught in 'their' trap?

Last time I bought lobster out here in AZ, it was $21.99 per lb (that was last year too, so its probably even more expensive today). That's 136 or so 1 lb lobsters to break even on the deal or just 90 1.5 lb lobsters. That's not too impossible to imagine. In addition, I have sent lobstergrams through Legal Seafood, and that's about $200 for a 4 lobster basic pack. When you look at that way, it starts to make a lot of sense.

I think its great. Local is not the market and neither are people that would buy lobsters from BJ's. (Thats just wrong anyways) …Pool your money people and alternate weeks.

Absolutely. These men show what being an American is about. If this is something you're in the market for I don;t know anyone who wouldn't prefer this. They're right, it's like you have your own personal lobsterman who works for you.

Cool concept. It proves that truly "all things are possible".

This article inspired me to continue marketing my
nail polishes with a unique twist. Each stylish
color is labeled an uplifting descriptive name and is packaged with a small
inspirational note card.

I launched the site in October 2007 – four months after resigning a horrible
day job. Since then sundaycosmetics.com has received over 57,000 hits, been
featured on a local morning show, in two magazines. Recently, a local chain
of 114 upscale convenience stores
agreed to carry my collection! My dream is an
internationally successful business.

All things are possible – when you believe and
work,

Thanks for an interesting article!

If I could afford it, I would be in. No question. Maine Lobster in California is expensive and to have a supply coming year round, what a treat! Definitely not for everyone, but what a greta and innovative idea!

I agree with cc from NM — Niche is the key word.
AND last check at BJ's & I live here in Maine, the price is $9.99 per pound for Chix, or one pound lobsters. 1.5lb lobsters are $11.99.
Not small by amy means. Also BJ's does not get their lobsters from Maine, they are shipped in from Canada & Mass.
This is all about the prestige of saying you own a piece of Maine. If you look at the fact they are being given as business gifts, they are tax write offs, so the guy who is receiving the lobsters is not out a penny. Sweet deal to me. This is a phenominal idea & Mac at New Meadows is just jealous he did not think of it first…. Go get 'em Ready boys!

I'm a transplant from the coast living in the middle of the country.

8$ a pound? I wish. Out here it's more like 15$+ a pound.

This may not be the best deal on the planet, but there's a convenience factor; and a distinct lack of seafood choices in Denver.

Yeah, if I were still in RI this would look silly. But I'm not and now I just need 3K. . .

price is when the seller and buyer are both unhappy or happy about. i'm guessing there are enough people with more than enough money to pay $3000 or min of 40 lobsters. Niche is the key work

Okay, using the math by anonymous, at 374 lbs of lobster @x 1.5 lbs a piece it is 249.34 lobstres. add in 1 lb of clams @ 3.99 lb & the mussels at 2.99 lb, plus all the other accoutrement, you are getting one heck of a deal. Don't forget, it is all the lobsters in the trap, all year……. not one shot, but all year.
Yes it perhaps would be cheaper to do it by the pound at BJ's, but this way it goes to the actaul lobsterman who is out there pulling the trap instead of a backroom dealer at BJ's who doesn't care if you spend your $$$ n a wide screen TV or an illegeally caught lobster. I'll give the $$ to the lobsterman any day…….

Unfortunately, I agree with rhody ram… way too expensive… $2,995 / $8 (average price per pound at BJ's) = 374 pounds of lobster at current market price. You are much better off just buying through your local store, even at $10 a pop…

Let's do the math here…. 40 x 10=400 plus 2lb x 15=30, so in total 430 dollars of stuff for 3k? Deal! LOL. I can get 3 fully catering massive clam bakes for that, now that would be door to door service.
