Newman’s Own after Paul

When brands are linked to iconic founders, outliving them is a tricky task. At Newman’s Own, leaders are laying plans for the brand to reach the next generation.

The Paul Newman brand of products will continue to succeed. The values of the brand, of the man, are so clear-cut and universally understood they have the power to transcend his physical presence. Brands are about simple and clearly-defined values; about promises made and kept relative to these values. The David Ogilvy brand of agency is still a leadership brand. Though the man, himself, is long gone, his brand endures as a result of the indelible brand blueprint he left in his stead. Jim Henson, the man behind the Muppet brand, though no longer with us, left a brand platform from which his funny, furry characters can carry on for generations to come. A brand is about promises made and promises kept. People will continue to believe in, and buy, the Paul Newman brand of salad dressings, coffee, popcorn, and more, not because they loved “Cool Hand Luke,” but because the man behind the brand had values both relevant and universally loved.

Mr. Newman not only donated more than $250 million dollars through his company, he inspired many others to found businesses based on his model. Companies such as

Give Something Back Business Products
Pura Vida Coffee, Humanitas Winery, and Peacekeepers Cause-Metics that donate almost all and sometimes all profits to charities have proven that regular folk can pursue profit for the common good as well.
Bless you, Mr. Newman, for all you have done for others and for the role model you have been and will continue to be.

I’m from Panama (Central America) it’s amazing that I can find Newman’s Own products down here. I love fig newmans fat free cookies. These are the only cookies I eat!!! They’re so good that I can eat the whole package in one go!

I purchased his products before I ever heard of the man’s charity. The reason is simple – his products are just darned good! My personal favorite is the spaghetti sauce. Many varieties are good, but there is one called Sockarooni (funny name, but amazing flavor) which is simply fantastic. I have recommended it to a number of my friends, and they have thanked me for it.

I’d like to take this moment to thank Paul Newman for the example that he has set for human beings, who are often shamelessly selfish. I remember thinking how fantastic his product was when I was a kid. I couldn’t believe that such a famous person would donate everything he made to charity. I wondered why more in his positon didn’t, and I hope that his children will carry on the name in memory of their father and to continue setting an example for the world!

I have been a customer of the Newman products from the very beginning. I have held Paul Newman and his family in high regard for a long time. He is a hometown hero here in the Cleveland OH area, so that was part of the appeal. But, I really loved the philanthropy and the information about organic foods. But, I wouldn’t buy them if they weren’t so tasty. I’ve tried pretty much every product of his that I’ve seen. Rarely have I been disappointed. I will remain a loyal customer because I like having that combination of good taste and good works.

There are a lot of movie stars and executives on Wall Street (or who were on wall street) who could learn a lot from Paul Newman’s example. He was a true gentleman and understood that wealth was to be used to better the world, not as a source of ego driven greed.

Your statement says something about you; you are unhappy and generally skeptical. The company is not obligated to give away anything and yet it is obvious it has been very generous. Lots of companies do not make anything, so what? Have you forgotten about all of the jobs created by this endeavor. You need to change your outlook.

I never grew up watching his movies, let alone really know who Paul Newman was – just remember my parents mentioning his name in some film here or there. But I always knew his name because of his salad dressing. So amazingly good.

When I heard how it went to charity, done. Customer for life. Shame on those of you who comment about “exact percentages of the profits” – it’s a heck of a lot better than what the greedy fools on Wall Street have ever done! (Especially in the past few weeks!)

This has been a private company. Off the $250 Million they claim they have paid to Charities, what has been the exact percentage off the revenues or profits. This is something that is not available and/or published in the past. So moving forward, what gaurantees does the public have that the percentages will remain the same.

Secondly, unlike other companies like General Mills or Kraft, this company does not make anything. It outsources manufacturing and just applies the label to it as Newman’s own.

First and foremost, my condolences to Joanne and the family. Paul has already been so revered in life and now eulogized with well deserved uncommon appreciation for this man who had become so accomplished and also on so many levels. Born into an entrepreneurial family, he carried that trait with him to his various endeavors and achievements. Through the course of developing his business talents and creating his companies, I am also incredibly confident he would have ensured that his company and the camp are set up with succession plans and funding streams to endure the tests of time.

Paul Newman was and is an American icon. He was a superb actor who lived his life with purpose, zest, and integrity. Paul Newman was and is a role model. So many famous people are not and set bad examples for those who look to them as hero’s. Paul Newman held that mantle and held it proudly.
My condolences to the Newman family as America has lost one of it’s greatest sons. I loved his work, his love of life and his Newman’s own products. I have been a consumer of them for years. They are the finest quality just like the man whose name is on the label.

RIP Paul Newman – a truly great actor, driver, entrepreneur and philanthropist. I believe that the Newman’s Own brand WILL go on – their products are great, (I especially love the salad dressings and pasta sauces). And, the company is run by, well, “Newman’s Own” (daughter, that is), so certainly that should help the company through this tough time – and the idea that the company also helps fund The Hole in the Wall camps, which will be Paul Newman’s legacy. Paul Newman was a dynamic, interesting and generous individual. However the reason I buy Newman’s Own products is not because of Mr. Newman – it is because they taste good, are usually a healthier choice than competitor products, and the profits go to charity. I began using “Newman’s Own” products out of curiosity and have stayed with them because they are delicious and you have the knowledge that the proceeds are going to charitable causes. I may not have the time to do as much volunteer work as I’d like, nor the funds to contribute as generously as I’d like to the charities I support. Since we all have to eat and buy groceries, this makes the shopping a bit of a “feel-good” action since you know that some of your outlay will go towards charity. He’s one of the few “real” people in Hollywood. Hard to think that he’ll be gone someday. He’s leaving a terific legacy. Others in that business would do well to follow his lead.

The bottom line is: Paul Newman has done an incredible amount of good, and he’s done it with an outstanding product. I caught Mr. Newman during the latter part of his career but recognize him as an American icon. I also recognize his products as outstanding; when I couple the quality of those products with the causes they support, it is a no-brainer that I will continue to patronize those products either when Mr. Newman is 100 or after he has gone on to the great beyond. His intention was to set things in motion for many, many years to come. He has done that. Along with his unforgettable roles, his products will constitute his legacy.

I don’t know what kind of cancer he has, but I hope that the family is exploring alternative cures. Allopathic medicine is a killer when it comes to chronic illness.

The brand will definitely survive. This is one of those times that the whole is truly greater than the sum of its parts and the parts are pretty phenomenal. Good products, contributing to a worthy cause. Gee, what a great concept.

Newman was a good actor. One of the best lines in the History of Movies has to be ” Hell, The Fall will Probly Kill Ya!” I will miss him when he’s gone.

Paul Newman has given back more than most in the same position. My guess is that people will buy the products for two reasons: 1.To support his charitable institution. 2. For the quality. It is a great way to kill two birds with one stone! I LOVE PAUL!

OF COURSE Newman’s Own will outlive Paul. It will be a blow when he is gone, but they have great products and have done so much good for charities and the needy…there is no way that the brand will perish along with Paul. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK NEWMANS!!

Paul Newman is a great man!! He is someone who makes a difference. A wonderful actor, a race car driver, founder of Newman’s Own, a long term marriage, his camps for kids.
This man is someone who actually is a role model.I particualarly admire his zest for life. I hope he beats his problem so we can have him with us for a long time.
God Bless Paul Newman

I love his products and the taste is some of the best out there from popcorn to salad dressing. I dont mind paying a bit more because it goes to charity, but if the charity leg of it dies, so does my purchases.

I buy Newman’s Own because the product is good, really frigg’n good. Not because of the picture on the bottle. I will look for products with the name, not because of the actor but I know the name means a quality product.

Hard to say at this point, with the price of food going up, people may rethink their spending habits, but Paul Newman is an icon in any market….

In my opinion, just how brands outlive their products, Newman’s Own brand can outlive the loss of Paul. The brand itself has built up so much brand power, equity, and integrity over the years that people have come to trust Newman’s Own products. People don’t merely buy the dressings, lemonades, sauces, etc. because of the connection to Paul but because they are genuinley good, trusted products. In 10 years when Paul is long gone consumers will continue to buy the new prodcuts they role out because of their quality and not because they rememeber paul.

Now, will the coporate charitable giving hold up after Paul’s passing, that’s a different story.

I certainly hope so. What a marvelous tribute to this wonderful soul that would be. I use Newman’s own salad dressings and salsas because I know that the proceeds to to his charities.(and yes they are good!)

The success of Newman’s Own is that every single product is of top quality. So if the quality is there AND you know the profits are also going to charity it’s a no brainer. But if the quality wasn’t there neither would be the long term (repeat) success Newman’s Own has achieved.
